|My name is Erica Godell and I am a certified birth doula through DONA International (www.dona.org). I have been a certified doula for five years and absolutely love birth work and supporting women. |
Pregnancy and giving birth are both deep rooted experiences in a woman's life that will remain with her forever. I feel so very fortunate to be a small part of something so profound....I think I have one of the best jobs in the world.
I began my journey working as a doula for a non-profit organization in Portland, OR providing labor support to mothers at Oregon Health and Science University. I have provided my doula services to mothers/families who have given birth at both hospitals and in home environments. My experience collaborating with professionals and families also includes working for Legacy Emanuel Hospital in the Prenatal Education program providing maternity tours and teaching sibling classes to expecting families.
I am a member of the Nursing Mother's Counsel of Oregon and am certified through the organization as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. Additionally, I am a member of Birth Support Network and Le Leche League.
As a certified birth doula I adhere to the DONA International Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. My passion for birth began when I attended my first birth at age 16 and was deeply moved by the experience. I felt it was my calling to become a doula when I was pregnant with my first son and realized how incredibly blessed I was to be an instrumental part of such a miraculous process. I love supporting mothers and families during this amazing and life changing time.
I use a variety of comfort measures and coping strategies including massage, aromatherapy, visualization, and relaxation to help a mother throughout her labor. I strongly believe in making informed decisions, so I have a lending library available to my clients to read about options and choices they have in preparation for their birth. My philosophy as a doula can be expressed in saying I honor the mother. It is her birth and her experience and I respect the vision she has of the birth of her baby and the decisions she makes regarding it. When I have been so fortunate to attend her sacred event, I bring my heart and hands to remind her of her strength and wisdom, and provide loving, nurturing, nonjudgmental, compassionate, and professional support.
When I am not engaged in my doula work I keep busy as a wife to my amazing husband, Kevin, and stay at home mom caring for my three wonderful boys, Leopold (11), Ezra (4) and Oscar (2).
